MALAYSIA ELLIPTICAL CLIP ERROR COIN

Malaysia Bunga Raya Series 2001 Sen Elliptical Clip Error Coin.
Rarity: RRRR
Elliptical Clip: Oval shaped coin due to a complete blank punch overlapping a previous punch. Normally 'Elliptical'& 'Crescent' Clips created together.

Elliptical clips coins are one of the most desirable forms of incomplete planchets.

The finished coin takes the form of an oval. The coin may be struck within the collar or outside the collar. If struck within the collar, one side of the ellipse may nestle against the collar or only the tips of the ellipse may be in contact with the collar.
Weight: 1.50gm (Normal: 1.74gm)
The first is an elliptical clip. You can see clear fish tailing around on the legends on the top part (Reverse: Clockwise 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock position) of the coin as this area was un-restrained by the collar. Conversely there's no fishtailing on the legends on the bottom part (Reverse: Clockwise 4 o'clock to 8 o'clock position) of the coin as this was constrained by the collar. Elliptical clips can also occur together with curved clips, straight clips, and ragged clips.
Diameter: 16.50mm (Normal: 18.00mm)
A number of theories have been advanced over the years to explain how elliptical clips occur.

In most cases it would appear that a blank hangs up in its hole in the coin metal strip. When the strip fails to advance properly, the blanking die slices through the “hanging blank” producing an elliptical clip blank and a crescent clip blank.
Composition: Copper Clad-Steel
Another, less likely scenario has a freshly-punched blank somehow getting trapped beneath the moving strip, lagging behind, and getting sliced through a second time by a blanking die.

This 2001 sen with an elliptical strike clip has reduced this cent to a small oval.

Johor Gold Kupang Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah (1623-1677) With Multiple Stikes On Reverse.
Rarity: RR/SS14
Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah (1623-1677)
A multiple strike, also referred to as a double exposure, occurs when the coin has additional images from being struck again. This coin exhibits more than two images because it was struck multiple times by the dies.
Reverse. Weight: 0.61gm. Diameter: 12.00mm
The eye appeal of the multiple strike error coin has made it one of the most sought after types.
The more obvious the encroachment of the second and third strikes on the first strike, the greater the interest.
More often than not, multiple strikes appear as almost shadows of previous strikes.

Commemorative Medallion Of Malaysia-China Friendship 1972
Malaysia and China celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2014.
AS the president of the Table Tennis Association of Malaysia, Tan Sri Michael Chen was invited to become a member of the Malaysian delegation to the first Asia-Latin America ping-pong tournament in 1972.
Michael Chen as the secretary-general of the Alliance and also MCA vice-president, he met Tun Abdul Razak Hussein often. At one of these meetings, he briefed the then Prime Minister about the trip.

Reverse.1972. Friendship
Tun Abdul Razak subsequently tasked Chen to find out if China would be keen to establish diplomatic relations and gave him a letter, written in his capacity as president of the Malaysian Olympic Council, to Zhou Enlai. Zhou “responded very well” and arranged for Chen to meet his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Yi.
Obverse.Weight:10.52gm. Diameter: 31.00mm
“It was just like a courting process,” recalls Chen, now 81. “Both sides felt like the chemistry was there.” On his return, he reported to Razak that China appeared to be willing to normalise relations.
Plain Edge
But it was not until 1974 that official ties began and Razak made his historic visit.
In 1973, Razak had asked Chen to investigate the delay in the courtship. Chen met the Xinhua news agency representative over dinner in Hong Kong. During the meal, he took care to sip Chinese tea while his hosts downed maotai wine so that he could stay alert. With his legal training, Chen realised the problem was a constitutional snag. “Neither country recognised dual citizenship,” Chen says.
According to China’s Constitution, if overseas Chinese did not become citizens of the country where they lived, they would be considered Chinese citizens.
Malaysia had 300,000 Chinese citizens with red identity cards, Chen explains. Razak was not willing for them to be considered Chinese citizens and hoped they would become Malaysians.
The only solution was to set up diplomatic ties first, with an embassy in both countries, and let the 300,000 decide by themselves whether to register at the Chinese embassy as citizens or remain to become Malaysians.
Obverse. Weight: 8.50gm. Diameter: 30.00mm. Thickness: 1.80mm
Reverse. RM1.00. Composition: Nordic Gold.
Within a fortnight, both sides had agreed and Razak received an invitation from Zhou to visit China in early 1974. Chen was part of the delegation and felt a sense of “mission accomplished”.

MALAYSIA CURVE CLIPPED PLANCHET ERROR COINS

$
0
0
Malaysia Bunga Raya Series 5 Sen & 10 Sen Curve Clipped Planchet Error Coins.
Rarity : RRR
A clipped planchet or edge bite error coin occurs when a coin is struck on an incomplete planchet. Coin blanks are punched out from strips of metal using a high-speed punch. Sometimes the strip isn't pushed along far enough after the previous blank was punched and this results in a planchet that isn't fully rounded. The resulting planchet has been punched out of the strip where the previous blank was cut, thus leaving a 'bite' out of the blank. The resulting coin after it has been through the minting press has a curved clip on the side of the coin.

The Blakesley effect is named for the American numismatist who first described it. The Blakesley effect occurs on most genuine clipped planchet error coins and is characterised by weakness in the rim opposite the clipped end of the coin.
The Blakesley Effect is a term used to describe inefficient metal flow, opposite a clip on a coin ( "opposite a clip on a coin" it means the effect will be more or less CW/CCW180 degrees around the rim) from the clipped area., when the rim is formed and the subsequent imperfect or incomplete rim formed at that position after striking.

2013 "200" CENTS OFF CENTER DOUBLE STRIKE ERROR COIN

Malaysia 3rd Series (M3S) 2013 "200" Sen (20 Cents) Off Center Double Strike Error Coin
Rarity: RRR
When a blank planchet is struck by the dies, the normal procedure is for the feeders to eject the struck coin out of the collar and into a chute. If there is a malfunction and the struck coin isn't ejected, it may receive a second or third strike by the dies. A multiple struck coin can happen in many ways and have many combinations of errors.
A planchet is feed into the coinage press and rest inside the collar on the anvil die. After being struck, the anvil die moves upward, raising the coin, the coin is suppose to exit from the coinage press and go to a collecting area.
If the coin was not eject properly after having been struck and falls partially inside the collar, it will be struck again. This is how we get the Double Struck Off-Center Error coins.
This is a piece of Malaysia Third Series coin with year dated 2013, 20 Cents Coin with Double Struck at 25% Off-Center Error. It exhibits a 200 sen on the reverse.

2001 50 CENTS DIE ADJUSTMENT STRIKE COIN

Malaysia Bunga Raya Series 2001 50 Sen With Die Adjustment Strike Coin.
Rarity: RR
The die alignment is adjusted by the technician at the hammer or reverse die. Alignment is important in that the tolerances between the feeder fingers, the collar and the die are quite small such that too much initial offset could result in damage to any of the above. To avoid this, the technician runs trial strikes at reduced pressure to test his adjustments. Although intentionally made, any that escape the mint are considered errors and are called a “Die Adjustment Strike.”
Die Adjustment Strikes are also known as die trials. This error occurs when a coin is struck from the press with very little pressure. When the press is being set up and adjusted, extremely weak strikes occur as the strike pressure reaches its optimum level. The resultant coins are very weakly struck and are gathered up afterwards to be destroyed and are rarely found in circulation.
Shown here is an example that showing only approximately 75% detail . The key diagnostic in identifying these is that there is equal weakness on all two sides – the reverse, and the obverse. The Mint technicians are very careful to prevent these from escaping the Mint; however, occasionally one will find its way out.

2007 20 CENTS PLAIN EDGE COLLAR DIE STRIKE ERROR COIN

Malaysia Bunga Raya Series 2007 20 Sen With Plain Edge Collar Die Strike Error Coin
Rarity:RR
The collar is the third die in the coining chamber; a device which surrounds the edge of the planchet as the coin is struck. The collar die keeps the coin metal from spreading larger than its intended diameter. The collar die also imparts the edge design, if any, onto the struck coin. The edge design includes such elements as the reeds, words, symbols or other edge devices. Even the flat, smooth finishes on the edges of coins like cents and nickels are considered to be "edge designs" imparted by the collar die.We all know about the hammer and anvil dies. But we sometimes overlook the collar die and its significance in the coin-striking process, especially as it relates to the production of error coins.
It occurs when the collar die is stuck in the recessed position, usually due to a build up of grease and debris. In this instance, when a planchet is fed into the coining chamber, it rests on top of the anvil die with no collar in place to retain the strike. Therefore, the planchet is struck between the anvil and hammer dies only.
This 2007 20 Cents Plain Edge Error coins are coins somehow escaped the edge reeding process. To authenticate the coin, I scrutinized the edge closely and found it to be unaltered. The weight and diameter were checked and found to be within tolerance.

Johor Mas (Gold) Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah (1571-1597)
Rarity: RRRR/SS7
The name "Johor" originated from the Arabic word Jauhar, which means "Precious Stones". Founded by Sultan Alauddin the son of Sultan Mahmud Shah, the last Sultan of Malacca, after fleeing from the Portuguese in Malacca. Johor harassed, attacked and became a thorn to the Portuguese during their 130-year rule. The Johor empire covered the area of Riau archipelago, Singapore, Terengganu, Pahang and parts of Sumatera namely Rokan, Siak, Kampar and Indragiri.

A trade coinage in gold for the State of Johore first appeared in the reign of the first Sultan Ala'uddin (1527/28-1564). It consisted of two denominations, the Mas and the Kupang and was used as far as Patani and Kedah as well as parts of Sumatra.
These gold coins were octagonal in shape except for the issue of one reign (Sultan Abdul Jalil) which were struck on circular flans.

A Mas usually weighed between 2.2gm to 2.6gm while a Kupang weighed about 0.60gm to 0.65gm., thus establishing the rate of exchange at 4 Kupang to 1 Mas Coin

I was told by a very serious Malay States Sultanate coins collector, he said he has not seen this SS7 Mas Johore gold coin for more than 15 years. It is definitely a very rare coin.
