TOKEN OF THE GENTING FOUNDER 80TH BIRTHDAY (1997)

Token Of The Genting Founder,Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong
When it comes to the Genting story, most Malaysians will recognise it as synonymous with the rise of its namesake hill resort,Genting Highlands Resort. Many though may not have truly appreciated the mammoth task involved in its construction and the vast resources and reserves mobilised to ensure what has proven today to be an unprecedented success in resort development.

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong
The idea of a hill resort was chanced upon by late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong amidst the crisp air of Cameron Highlands in 1964. Tan Sri Lim was then working on a hydro-electric power project at the popular hill resort, patronised mostly by British colonials seeking cool refuge from the tropical heat, when he foresaw a prosperous Malaysia of the future desiring a cool mountain holiday resort within the reach of all Malaysians.

A study of the maps and Kuala Lumpur’s vicinity located the ideal site - the 1,800-metre Gunung Ulu Kali, just 58 km from Kuala Lumpur. Amidst the dense virgin tropical jungle and rugged terrain, the task to transform a remote mountain into Malaysia’s premier holiday destination seemed impossible… but not for Tan Sri Lim.

Setting up a private company called Genting Highlands Berhad on 27 April 1965, with the late Tan Sri Haji Mohammed Noah bin Omar, Tan Sri Lim successfully obtained approval for the alienation of 12,000 acres and 2,800 acres of land from the Pahang and Selangor State Government respectively between the years 1965 and 1970.

On 18 August 1965, a technical and construction team began the herculean task that would take four years to complete the access road from Genting Sempah to the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali.

To ensure the sound and prompt construction of the hotel-cum-resort, Tan Sri Lim devoted all of his time, capital and resources, including the reserves of his family company, Kien Huat Berhad towards the making of this "dream resort".
Obverse. Weight: 4.90gm. Diameter:20.45mm.
On 31 March 1969, the late YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister graced the official laying of the foundation stone for the company’s pioneer hotel, the then Highlands Hotel, marking the completion of the access road to Genting Highlands Resort.

YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman
The Prime Minister was impressed that the private sector, without the assistance of the Government, could develop a mountain resort for the enjoyment of all Malaysians; a gaming licence was suggested to help accelerate the development of this remote area.

In 1971, the first hotel at Genting Highlands was successfully completed and was then named Highlands Hotel (now renamed Theme Park Hotel).
Since the opening of the first hotel in 1971, Genting Highlands Resort continued to grow from strength to strength. The development of the area continued to this present day to enhance Genting Highlands Resort as the premier holiday destination in the region while ensuring that the natural beauty of the rain forest is maintained.
To date, Genting Highlands Resort has five hotels (namely Genting Hotel, Highlands Hotel, Resort Hotel, Theme Park Hotel and First World Hotel) and two apartment blocks (Ria and Kayangan Apartments) at the hilltop and Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort. Together with integrated world-standard entertainment facilities encompassing various leisure, indoor and outdoor theme parks and gaming facilities, Genting Highlands Resort has become the "City of Entertainment" and Malaysia's Premier Resort.

In 1997, Genting Highlands Resort further boosted its facility attraction with Genting Skyway cable car system that provides a 3.38 km transport to the hilltop. Genting Skyway is also recognised as the "World's Fastest Mono Cable Car System" with a maximum speed of 21.6 km per hour and the "Longest Cable Car in Malaysia and Southeast Asia".
Genting Group Genting Group, founded by Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong and with Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay as its Chairman and Chief Executive, has since expanded and diversified from its initial hotel and resort activities to plantation, power generation and oil and gas exploration and production.

Today, Genting Berhad is a leading multinational corporation in Malaysia that has constantly been acknowledged by various organisations for its exemplary leadership and management. Genting Berhad was acknowledged as the No.1 Leading Company in Malaysia for 10 years, i.e. in 2004 and from 1994 to 2002 by The Asian Wall Street Journal 200 (formerly Far Eastern Economic Review 200). Genting Berhad was also rated No.1 in Malaysia and No.2 in Asia for Overall Best Managed Company for the Decade by Asiamoney.
Thickness: 2.22mm
Sadly, the Founder Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong passed away peacefully on 23 October 2007 and was laid to rest at Gohtong Memorial Park on 29 October 2007. He will be greatly missed by the management and staff of the Genting Group.

"Once the goals have been clearly defined, with the greatest amount of determination and hard work, one can conclusively realise one's goals." - Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, Founder

GOLD KUPANG JOHOR SULTAN ABDULLAH SHAH 1615-1623

Johor Gold Kupang Sultan Abdullah Ha'ayat Shah (1615-1623)
Rarity: RRRR/11B
Obverse: Sultan Abdullah Shah. Weight: 0.63gm. Diameter:12.00mm
Sultan Abdullah Ha'ayat Shah was the 7th Sultan of Johor who reigned from 1615 to 1623. Before he became sultan of Johor, Abdullah Ha'ayat Shah was also known as Raja Bongsu, Raja Seberang or Raja di Ilir. According to the testimony of Dutch Admiral Cornelis Matelief de Jonge Raja Bongsu was one of four surviving sons of Raja Ali bin Abdul Jalil (alias Raja Omar) of Johor. The other remaining male (half-) siblings were described by Admiral Matelief as Raja Siak, Raja Laut, and Alauddin Riayat Shah III. The latter ruled as the 6th sultan of Johor between the death of his father Raja Ali Jalla in 1597 and the Acehnese attack on Johor in 1613.
Reverse: Khalifatul Muminin.
In 1603 Raja Bongsu was instrumental in forging the early diplomatic relations with the Dutch by lending assistance to Admiral Jacob van Heemskerk on 25 February 1603 in attacking and plundering the Portuguese carrack, the Santa Catarina, in the Johor River estuary off present-day Singapore. He was also responsible for sending one of the first diplomatic missions of a Malay ruler to the Dutch Republic in the same year. Headed by Megat Mansur, the Johor embassy sailed to Europe on the ships of Admiral van Heemskerk in 1603. Megat Mansur did not survive the voyage, but other members of the Johor embassy did and returned with the fleet under the command of Admiral Cornelis Matelief de Jonge in 1606.In that year, Raja Bongsu formally ratified two treaties with the Dutch (dated 17 May and 23 September 1606) and signed himself as the co-ruler of Johor. He also lent active assistance to Admiral Matelief during his seaborne attack on Portuguese Melaka in or around May 1606.
Obverse: Sultan Abdullah Shah. Weight: 0.61gm. Diameter:12.00mm
In early 1609 Raja Bongsu received Dutch Admiral Pieter Willemsz Verhoeff at Batu Sawar. On this occasion one of the German officers serving in Verhoeff's fleet, one Johann Verken, described the physical appearance of Raja Bongsu. He wrote that the Raja was "a young man in his 30s ... In his appearance and body a well-proportioned person, rather tall, articulate, and fair-skinned both on his body and on his face."
Reverse: Khalifatul Muminin.
After the Portuguese had imposed an economically crippling blockade on the Johor River for much of the year 1609, Raja Bongsu was necessitated (through the machinations of his half-brother Raja Siak) to sign a peace treaty with the Portuguese Melaka in October 1610.

Described as his personal "fiefdom" by Admiral Matelieff, Raja Bongsu controlled the settlement of Kota Seberang which was located almost straight across the Johor River from the royal administrative center and capital Batu Sawar. He is also said to have controlled areas around the Sambas River on the island of Borneo.
In 1613, Raja Bongsu was one of the prisoners taken back to Aceh after the invasion of Johor by sultan Iskandar Muda. He was married to one of Iskandar's sisters, and returned to Johor as the new sultan. Raja Bongsu was subsequently enthroned as Abdullah Ha'ayat Shah of Johor. His half-brother Alauddin Riayat Shah III who had fallen from power at the time of Iskandar Muda's offensive on Johor in 1613 had fled to Lingga and probably died there in or around 1615.
In 1618, Abdullah Ha'ayat Shah moved to Lingga and gained the support of Orang Laut and the Dutch to wage a war against Aceh. He later divorced his wife who was also a sister of Iskandar Muda, a move that further angered the sultan. He spent most of his reign as a wanderer, pursued from town to town and island to island by the Acehnese. He died at Tambelan archipelago on March 1623.

A FANTASY COIN WITH ANCIENT CONNECTIONS

A Fantasy Coin With  Ancient Connections,The "Wind, Flowers, Snow and Moon"
Exhibit A. Obverse:"Wind, Flowers, Snow and Moon"
Many a time had I been faced with searching questions by fellow members of the Malaysian Numismatic Society (MNS) on the coin illustrated below (Exhibit A); questions as to when it was produced, who made it, for whom was it cast, the purpose to served, the meaning of the Chinese characters, on the obverse, and the reasons for the display of human couples in the four standard natural positions of blissful fulfillment.

Reverse: Pictures of frolicking love scenes of a couple of man and woman
I ( refer to Mr. E.E.Sim, the late President of MNS) had given my explanations to the inquirers; some accepted them in toto, some with a pinch of salt, while others described it was a "joy coin" or "gift coin" or even a pornographic issue.
W:61.30gm.D:68mm.T:2.50mm
My research has revealed what other numismatic books say of this type of coin.

1. An authority on Chinese ancient coins had this to say in his book, "An Illustration of Chinese Ancient Coins" by Orlando Y. Tsai (published in 1973 in then Taiwan, Republic of China, pages 438-439):

TRANSLATION:
Congratulatory expressions were widely used not only on social occasion but were also found in writing. Thus they also appeared on coins presented as gifts to friends. This was already common during the Period of the Warring States. On one side of the coin was imprinted the character "JI" (meaning "lucky" or "propitious"). This coin was one of the earliest imprinted with words meaning "luck."

Later, during the "Qin" and "Han" Dynasties, people imprinted on the half-tael and 5-zhu coins such inscriptions as "Great Wealth and Honour", "Happiness Without End", "Blessed With Many Descendants", "House Filled With Gold and Jade", "Harmonious King Lords Relationship", "Forever In Each Other's Thoughts." During the reigns of Eastern Han, Wei and Jin, coins carried propitious inscriptions denoting good luck on their reverse sides. On the obverse side were carved a variety of floral designs. These coins were specially minted for the sole purpose of giving of gifts. When, actually, did such coins come into existence? For now there is no way to find out. However, they should have been in fairly wide circulation after the passing of the Six Dynasties. At present there is a fairly large number of coins with propitious inscription minted by the Tang and Sung Dynasties used as gifts. These inscriptions consisting of 7 or 8 or even more then 10 characters were accompanied by elaborate designs such as "The Three Lights", "The Eight Treasures", "Sea Tide", "The Rising Sun" and "The Roaming Immortals in Flight" and so on.
Obverse:"Wind, Flowers, Snow and Moon".
Reverse
W:31.45gm. D:43.00mm. T:2.50mm.
Beginning from the Ming and Qing Dynasties the designs took on a new trend. This included a hole in the coin and propitious words were conveyed in a veiled fashion by flowers like the lotus blooms and pictures of babies. This is a play on the sound of the Chinese characters and was to mean "begetting many sons." Where the carving consisted of a clump of bamboos and a magpie, the concealed meaning is "good tidings!"(Note: "Magpie" in Mandarin is "Xique.""XI" is also "happy". This is play on words.) The imagination combined with the exquisite workmanship is a wonder to behold.

Joy money.
There is no greater joy for the family than the joy of birthday and wedding. Of the old coins now in existence, there is one concerning birthday celebrations. Of these there is one with a diameter measuring about 6 cm. On the obverse side of the coin are words "Longevity matching that of the tortoise and crane." The writing and the minting are incomparably exquisite and the coin is generally thought to be a product of the Tang and Sung Dynasties.
Obverse:"Wind, Flowers, Snow and Moon".
There is another coin measuring about 4 cm in diameter and carries similar writings of comparable calligraphic excellence. On the reverse side, however, the picture depicts also a deity with a stork and heavenly clouds. Judging from the metal, it is possibly a product of the Tang and Sung Dynasties. As for coins with inscriptions of "Prolonged Good Fortune and Longevity", "A Thousand Autumns and Ten Thousand Years", "Longevity Marching That of The Tortoise and Stork" etc; there is a large quantity of them big and small. They were all minted prior to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The standard of manufacture is by no means inferior to the official coins in general use. Regarding the "happy coins" used in weddings, they are known by many names and are made in different shapes and styles.
The most important and best known to the people are the so-called "fire-evading coins." The description on its face usually carries the words "Wind, Flowers, Snow and Moon" Some are inscribed the words "Royal Silhouette of Emperor Ming." The reverse side usually carries a picture of a couple of man and woman or of 8 persons. Still, some are round and carrying no words. Legends have it that as the families of both the bride and the bridegroom provided a large quantity of dowry what they least wanted is a fire. Fortunately for them, the Goddess of Fire is a shy young maiden. When she found the coin in the dowry, she would shyly withdraw instead of creating trouble. That is why the people described the coin as "fire-evading".
W:9.80gm. D:2.70mm.T:2.00mm.
As for the coin that carries the picture of the Ming Emperor, it is said that the picture is that of Xuan Zhong of Tang Dynasty. Court officials peeped at the frolicking love scenes of the Emperor with Yang Gui Fei. So people gave the coin that description. In fact, this is just an excuse and hardly convincing. This design is found on mirrors of the Qin Dynasty and stone carvings on tombs of the Han Dynasty. The story, therefore, dates back a long time. Probably it had its beginning in the pre-historic era and is a relic of the phallic-worship period, symbolising conjugal harmony and a blessing in the form of innumerable descendants. All this is good reasoning. To say they commemorate Emperor Tang Xuan-Zhong would be ludicrous and sound even more ludicrous to say they repel the God of Fire.
Obverse:"Wind, Flowers, Snow and Moon".
2. Lately, this coin appeared in a voluminous 509-paged publication entitled "Zhong Quo Hua Qian" from Shanghai, People's Republic of China (1992). Illustrations No. 413, 414 & 415 from that publication are reproduced herein as Exhibit B, Exhibit C & Exihibit D respectively.
3. Lastly, this similar exhibit was one of the items put up for sale at the Taisei-Baldwin-Gillio Coin Auction held on the 27th of February, 1997, at Raffles City Convention Centre, Singapore, with the reserve price of US $150-200.The said item was described as follows: "Charm Money in copper with central square hole possibly made in Ming Dynasty. Diameter 38mm. Obverse and reverse four styles of making love in Good Fine Condition".

I hope the contents of this article disproves the conflicting opinions of any Doubting Thomas es in our Society as to the coins' historical background.

I have been in possession of Exhibit A since 1953.

Bangka Tin Jokoh

Haza Qurush Pangkal Pinang (Unlisted)
Bing Lang Gong Si

Bangka is an island just off the coast of Southeastern Sumatera. It is a long tributary of Palembang and gained particular importance during the early eighteenth century (around 1711) when tin was discovered there.

The etnic Chinese were instrumental in the development of tin mining in Bangka. After a while, they proceeded to issue coinage for local use as well, during the height of tin mining activities around 1750.
Thu Piang Kompani (Unlisted)
Dan Pi Gong Si
Similar to the situation in Malay states, Thailand and Borneo, the Chinese in Bangka were associated together in “Kong-Si” or fraternal organizations. It is likely that many of these “Kong-Si” had issued their own coins. These coins all have a wide flat rim, square or round hole and a slightly raised edge around the hole, in imitation of Chinese cash. All are cast in tin or tin alloy. The diameter ranges from 28mm to 33mm.
Pokok Nampong (Unlisted)
Nan Bang Gong Si
These tin jokohs can be classified into 4 main groups:
1. Chinese inscriptions on both sides (the most common type)
2. Arabic inscriptions on one side and Chinese inscriptions on another side (scarce type)
3. Chinese inscriptions on one side and ornamental designs on another side (common type)
4. Ornamental designs on both sides (rare type)

Around 200 of different varieties have been identified so far. There are 10 varieties of Bangka jokohs, including a few rare ones, listed in the upcoming MNS auction on 28 June 2015.

Jokoh Timah Bangka

Alamat Judi  With Unknown Symbol (Unlisted)
Alamat Judi; Lie Gang

Tung Yong (For General Circulation)(Unlisted)
Ornamental Design

Fa (Gaining Fortune) (Unlisted)
Fa (Gaining Fortune) (Unlisted)
到目前为止,已有大约两百种不同的邦加私铸锡币被发现。在即将于2015年6月28日举行的马来西亚钱币协会拍卖会上,会有十种不同的这类锡币被拍卖,当中不乏一些较罕见的。

MALAYSIA $1.00 COPPER-ZINC-TIN BLANK (1989-1996)

$

Copper-Zinc-Tin Blank Of Malaysia Bunga Raya Series Dollar Coin (1989 - 1996).
The second series of Malaysia sen coins (The Bunga Raya Series) entered circulation in late-1989, sporting completely redesigned observes and reverses, but predominantly retaining the design of edges, diameters and composition of the first series' (The Parliament House Series) coins.
Changes include the depiction of items of Malay culture on the obverse, and the inclusion of a Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Malay: Bunga Raya), the national flower of Malaysia, on the upper half of the reverse. The second series was designed by Low Yee Kheng.

In addition to changes on its observe and reverse, the size of the 1989-1996 1 ringgit coin an exception.1 ringgit coin was also reduced from a diameter of 33 mm to 24 mm, and was minted from an alloy of copper, zinc and tin, as opposed to the first series' cupronickel. The $ symbol was brought over to the new coin, but was dropped in favour of "RINGGIT" for coins minted from 1993 onwards.

On 7 December 2005, the 1 ringgit coin was demonetised and withdrawn from circulation. This was partly due to problems with standardisation (two different versions of the second series coin were minted) and forgery.

How blanks are made ?
Coin blanks used for striking coins can be purchased from coin blank suppliers, or be produced by the mint itself. In making such blanks, bars are first scrubbed to provide a consistent surface, free from impurities or imperfections which not only produce defective coins, but also reduce the life span of the dies. The bars are later annealed and rolled to become strips of metal having the exact thickness specified of each denomination of coin.
Blanks and planchets represent the same product at different stages of production: the unstruck, circular pieces of metal that become coins when struck between the dies. Blanks are unfinished planchets that haven't been through all of the processing steps necessary before they can be struck into coins. Once a blank has been through all of the processing steps, it becomes a planchet and is ready to be struck.
