Collectibles Auction Asia 4/2014 auction was completed with another big success. A total value of more than SG$300,000 worth of  auction items were sold.
Since I came back to Malaysia on Sunday evening (5/10/2014), my handphone started receiving calls from many dealers and coin collectors, they were just wanted to double confirm those "crazy" realized prices in the Collectibles Auction Asia 4/2014 (Singapore) auction.

On the second day (Monday), I started to receive calls from public from the North and Sarawak, claiming that they had read their local newspapers about the Malaysia 1969 50 sen was sold for RM82,000 in Singapore and they had a few pieces in hand for sale, they asked me to offer a "good" price to buy their 1969 50 sen.

Since then, everyday I received many calls from the public wanted to sell their Malaysia 1969 50 sen.

I think, this is a good sign. The realized prices from our Bank Negara Malaysia's Golden Numbers Banknotes Auction and The Collectibles Auction Asia 4/2014 (Singapore) auction has shows that the world of numismatic in Malaysia is still very strong. Cheers!

1911 Australia First Bronze Penny
This coin will be kept as a good remembrance because it was given to me by my long lost in contact classmate from class 5 Arts 3 of Sekolah Tinggi Port Dickson (STPD), Negeri Sembilan.

Mr. Lim Kok Onn, was my classmate in 1978 & 1979 (Form IV and Form V) in STPD. On the day of our Malaysia Numismatic Society Auction No.161 which was held on 28-9-2014 (Sunday) at our Museum Negara, he came to attend the auction with the intention of getting to know me, Dickson Niew. He was not aware that I was his classmate although he has visited my Blog and facebook very often.

When he approached me and introduced himself, I shocked him by calling out his full name. We were so happy to meet up at an unexpected venue and occasion. He infect, was ready to give me a piece of counterfeit Singapore Cockerel Merchant Copper Token, he knew I like to do research. Because I was very busy with my duty in the MNS Auction, I personally invited him to visit my Dickson Niew Collection at Subang Jaya.

Today, he came to visit me, we had lunch and had a good chat about numismatic. He gave me another coin of his collection, the first  "Australian" Penny, which I would like to share with you.

This was the first year (1911 AD) that bronze coins were issued for Australia. It was called the Commonwealth Series. One Penny and halfpenny denominations were struck at the Royal Mint in London. Of special significance is that 1911 Penny coins were the first "Australian" Pennies.

UPTOWN SHAH ALAM CAUGHT FIRE

Uptown Shah Alam Seksyen 24 Caught Fire This Morning
Persiaran Sultan, Seksyen 24, 40200 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia
Uptown Shah Alam houses over 425 stalls offering a multitude of goods including clothing, accessories, food, household items as well as pets.
A total of 196 stalls in Shah Alam Uptown night market in Section 24 razed to the ground in a predawn fire at 2.40am, early today (15-10-2014-Wednesday).

Fire Started From This Shoe Stall.
No injuries or fatalities were reported. The losses suffered estimated to be more than RM18 millions, the cause of the fire were still being investigated.
Uptown BankNotes  Street.
Among the victims, is our numismatist Che'Ri from Uptown BankNotes. Early this morning, I received many massages asking and telling me what had happened to Uptown BankNotes. Nobody has any confirmed news about the fire happened at Uptown Shah Alam and nobody can contact our Che'Ri.
Uptown BankNotes  Street.
I decided to pay a visit to the site after I send my son to his school. When I approached the junction entering to Uptown Shah Alam, I was blocked by traffic police personals and MBSA officers. The police very politely informed me that the site is closed for Fire Department to carry out the investigation. I made a turned around and went through a residential area, finally I arrived at the site.
Uptown BankNotes  Street.
As I was walking to the razed area, I heard someone calling me "Dickson"! When I turned around, is him, Che'Ri. I was so please to see him in person. I told him many numismatic friends are worry about him.

He told me he is still in okay condition although his shop was confirmed total lost in the blaze. He told me he was lucky because he was still in the shop when the blaze starts at 2.45am. He used to close his shop and go home at 2.30am. But this morning he was still around after 2.30am to do some cleaning. The electricity was tripped at 2.45 am while he was using his vacuum machine. He heard someone behind his stall was shouting "Fire"! Fire"!. He went over to take a look, a shoe stall was covered in thick smoke. The shoe stall assistant, who was still having his snack in a nearby food stall rushed back and opened the door. The fire gushed out from the shoe stall and spread to the next stall located just adjacent to Uptown BankNotes in just a split of second. Our Che'Ri instantly rushed back to his own shop to savage his belongings. He managed to safe some of his banknotes, coin albums and framed uncut banknotes. The fire was already gushed into his stall during his third attempt. He had to give up! He lost his numismatic accessories and numismatic catalogs totally!

He brought me to view around the burnt venue. I saw many stall owners were sitting around looking helplessly. Some fire fighters were still around, they looked very tired.

I was told by Che'Ri, they were being promised by the "Adun YB" who visited them this morning a temporary site to run their business.
He knew many numismatic friends were trying to call him. He asked me to thank you for your concerned and he said sorry to you because he need some time to settle his problems.

Cheers! Che'Ri! You will be Better in future!!!

KUPANG (GOLD) DINAR MATAHARI PATANI-KELANTAN

Patani-Kelantan Gold Kupang Flower Type Dinar Matahari.
Rarity: RRR/SS61

This is the Gold Dinar of Kelantan-Patani in the 16th to18th century. The motif of the sun on the obverse of the gold coin has resulted in it being called Dinar Matahari (sun). Sun motifs found on these coins are like the sun is shining. Dinar Matahari is said to be affected by the currency used in the Kingdom of Patani, and it is believed to have been introduced by traders from India. The fact was confirmed when there is a discovery of coins using the sun as a motif on one side, and a bull motif on the other side, where these design was found in the Indian currency in the 3rd century BC. Therefore, it is likely the influence of the government of India to our Dinar Matahari Gold Kupang Patani-Kelantan currency. Although not all Dinar Matahari are using the shining sun motifs, some of them are using motifs such as flowers, but there were also called Dinar Matahari. Type of flower used is Lotus, it was used as a motif on the obverse of the Gold Kupang was by the influence of Buddhism, the lotus flower, is a symbol of chastity, cleanliness and purity, according to Buddhist believers.

Patani-Kelantan. Dinar Matahari (Six Petals) Gold Kupang of Patani-Kelantan Sultanate ( 16-18th Century)

Obverse : A 6 PETALLED FLOWER

Reverse: MALIK AL ADIL
Weight : 0.60gm

Diameter: 9mm

Composition :Gold

Ref Saran's : SS61

Rarity: RARE.

Source:(mrbacoincollection)

Rarity: R/SS51

One more rare Gold Kupang that I received from my trip visit to Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
This "Damarussalam" Patani-Kelantan Gold Kupang was sold to me by En.Azman Azahari when I was back to Subang Jaya.

It was listed as SS51 and rated "R" in Master Saran Singh book, "The Encyclopaedia Of The Coins Of Malaysia Singapore And Brunei 1400-1967".

The "Damarussalam" Patani-Kelantan Gold Kupang is weight at 0.61 gram and with a diameter measured at 9.50mm

On the reverse in Arabic is "Khalifah Shaib" which means "Kind Ruler".
On the reverse in Arabic is "Khalifah Shaib" which means "Kind Ruler".
It is a plain edge Gold Kupang with gold composition.

Dr. Ibrahim Bakar told me when we met up at Sasana Kijang in his recent trip to Kuala Lumpur, the Arabic inscription  " Damarussalam" should be read as "Darussalam", but because in order the word "Darussalam" can be written in a form that the "Sun" and the "Crescent Moon" can be shown in a more prominent font, it was translated as "Damarussalam". I learnt new knowledge from him. Thank you Dr. Ibrahim.

Although it was rated as one "R"in Master Saran Singh book, "The Encyclopaedia Of The Coins Of Malaysia Singapore And Brunei 1400-1967", but I was told by a few senior Malay States Sultanate collectors , this "Damarussalam" Patani-Kelantan Gold Kupang is not easy to find, it should also be rated as"RRR".

MASTER SARAN SINGH WITDREW THE LETTER OF CERTIFICATION ON MAS JOHOR

Announcement: Master Saran Singh had decided to withdraw the letter of "Authentication Of Mas Johor" that he signed in a meeting held in Kuala Lumpur on 26-11-2011 with immediate effect.(9.30pm. 28-10-2014). He is no longer responsible in any Johor Gold Kupang and Mas business transaction using or attached with this letter with his signature. Thank you!
Two days ago, Master Saran Singh visited my Dickson Niew Collection shop at Subang Jaya. He told me he was very angry, upset and sad that somebody is using his letter of authentication  that he certified during our meeting in Bob Chew's shop at Berjaya Times Square on 26-11-2011 to sell forgery Sultanate Gold Coinage. He received couple of complaints from some senior numismatists on this irresponsible seller.

I was the person who arranged the meeting. ("MAS'' MEETING IN KUALA LUMPUR. 26-11-2011.http://dniewcollectors.blogspot.com/2011/11/malaysia-sultanate-coins.html). Among persons who attended at the meeting were  Anjung Numismatik , the Johore MAS man from Johore, MGM Sabri, Mr.Chaw, Bob Chew from Kuala Lumpur, new and young collectors Alex Wong and Rickky Chia from Bukit Jalil. It was a very meaningful meeting.

But, later we found that a caveat emptor was using the authentication letter singed by Master Saran to promote his counterfeit Mas Johor. Master Saran Singh was very sad, he said how can he used our good faith and sincerity to do something that it is going to tarnish our name, damage our good reputation, spoil our future generation in numismatic, cheating the young and up coming numismatists.

Half an hour ago, Master Saran Singh wanted me to announce his final decision that he is withdrawing the letter of authentication of the Mas Johor that he signed during that meeting. He is no longer responsible on any Mas Johor transaction that using this letter as the tool of creditability. He cautious the buyers not to trust such deals attached with this letter. Please ask for other Malay Sultanate coin sifus for second or even third opinion before you decide to do the purchase.

We feel very sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Perak Tin Clad Aluminium Gaming Token (1925)

I was given a chance by a very senior numismatist to inherit this dated 1925 Perak tin clad aluminium gaming token. He told me he collected this token and has been keeping it in his collection for more the 20 years. This token was found in Perak.

He told me it was a gaming  token that was used in gambling activities. When I showed to Master Saran Singh during his recent visit to Dickson Niew Collection shop at Subang Jaya, he said it can be a tally or Checks coin too.
On the obverse, it was designed with a  peacock in the center.(Some claimed to be a owl or a frog). It was surrounded with a fire like design on the inner ring and dotted design at the outer ring, the dotted design are resembled the peacock tails. It also struck with dentils on the rim.

On the reverse, the inscription is a figure "1" in the center of a circle, surrounded with dotted design that resembled the tails of peacock bird, floral design on the external ring. That is a ribbon designed at the bottom of figure "1". It means 1 Cent? That is no value indication.

This token has a collar die strike error. The error shows that it was a struck token.

More interesting to me on this token is on its obverse.  I saw the date "1925" under the peacock but on the stomach of the peacock, they are some wordings. I read the alphabets as "WEY" on the top layer but on the second layer, I am not so sure the group of alphabets means. It looked like "ZUNP", but what is the meaning?  I sincerely seek your opinion! Please share with me if you have some clues on this gaming token. Thank you in advance.

Composition: Aluminium.
This special service was provided by Money Museum Of BNM  from 1989 until 2006 and it was discontinued when the old Money Museum of BNM was closed for renovation. Among  the numismatists visited my Dickson Niew Collection shop at Subang Jaya recently, Mr. Loh Kai Lin, a 68 years old man came to visit me with his family. He showed me his collection of coins and banknotes.
Original Note
While going through his collections , one particular paper banknote caught my attention is a Malaya Japanese Occupation 10 cents paper banknote. It is a weird colored 10 cents banknote.

Mr Loh Kai Lin told me this 10 cents JIM note was drew by his uncle Mr. Loh Weng Kuan during the period of  Japanese invasion of  Malaya from 1942 to 1945. During then he was only 3 years old. He said his uncle had drew a couple of pieces. But he was caught and brought away by the Japanese army when a "Japanese Running Dog"  (Informer) reported to the Japanese authority about his uncle activity. Since then, they have never seen his uncle again.

Counterfeit Petani-Kelantan  Debased Gold Kijang Kupang.

During my recent trip to down South, I was very lucky to be given a chance to view a collection of forgery Malay States Sultanate coinage belonged to a very senior numismatist from Singapore.

Among the forgery Malay States Sultanate coinage, that is a piece of Petani-Kelantan "Gold" Kijang Kupang. Due to its "gold"(suppose to be) already toned to reddish color, I believed that it was a contemporary counterfeit debased "gold" Kijang Kupang.

I was told by this senior numismatist, he has been keeping it for more than 10 over years. His statement was supported with the natural toned color of the debased gold material.
On the obverse, the bull / Kijang (Deer) was designed facing to the left  with ectoplasm,no hump with tail raised without touching the Circle (Sun) or the moon. It also exhibited the bull / Kijang (Deer) was with two pair of shorter leg.

On the reverse in Arabic is " Malik Al Adil" in inscription of three lines of crude writting.

Sorry, I have no chance to take the weight because I didn't bring along my digital weighing machine.
