NGC GRADED COUNTERFEIT COIN AS AU DETAILS.

Malaysia Parliament House Series 1985 50 Cents Counterfeit Coin Graded By NGC AU Details.
I still believed that the Parliament House series 1985 50 Cents counterfeit coin is the best contemporary counterfeits that I had came across in Malaysia so far. This coin was circulated freely for almost 20 years without being detected, one piece even once past the stringent authentication of a few Pakar Numismatik Malaysia in one of the MNS Auction as missing "i"variety.

And now, it was even graded as genuine coin by NGC in AU Details.

In 2005,it was spotted by Mr.Tony Aw, a very senior Malaysia numismatist, he confirmed a similar 1985 50 Cents coin is a counterfeit coin in one of the MNS Auction's authentication meeting.

For more details, please visit :http://dniewcollectors.blogspot.com/2011/03/c.html.Posted on 20-3-2011.
Few days ago, Mr. MK Wong, a senior coins collector came to my Dickson Niew Collection shop at Subang Jaya. He came to my shop with a motive to show me a piece of Parliament House series 1985 50 Cents counterfeit coin. It was graded by NGC, a professional coin grading house in US as a genuine coin with AU Details- Surface Hairlines.
He asked me, "How can an international professional coin grading house made such mistake?" , "We paid their professional charges, but in returned they keep making mistake!", " Yes, they asked us to send back those wrongly graded coins to them, no extra charges to be re-capsulated, but we still need to bare the insurance and shipping cost!""Or our coins are being graded by their trainee graders?"

MALAYSIA 1968 CENT IN NICKEL?

$

Malaysia Parliament Series 1968 Plated One Cent Coin .
In the Steven Tan's 21st Edition Catalogue , the new "The Standard Catalogue Of Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei Coin & Paper Money", One Cent dated 1979 minted as Mint Error on a Nickel planchet , only two pieces known to exist was rated as "RRR".
In his 20th Edition, this 1979 Nickel Cent coin was priced at RM3,000 for an uncirculated (UNC) in condition and priced at RM4,500 for a piece in brilliant uncirculated (BU) condition.

This attractive valued has prompted many caveat emptors try to forge this 1979 Cent. The most common way to forge is to plate the 1979 Cent with zinc so that it looks like a nickel coin.

One way to check the authenticity of this coin is the weight, the normal weight of a Copper-Clad Steel Cent is 1.74 gram. Anything more than the normal weight is questionable.

In this case the 1968 Cent coin exhibited in my post has a weight of 2.01 gram (Normal is 1.94 gram). To further proof its genuineness, you can make a small scratch at its rim. If the scratched spot shows a brown based metal, you can be sure that it is a forge copy. Another scientific way is to send the coin for laboratory test.

On the second day of my trip to Kelantan on 18th August 2014,  I was very attracted to a "Matahari" tin coin that was belonged to Ustaz Rusdi Jusoh. He bought the Patani-Kelantan Tin Pitis or Keping from an Australian.
(Read more: http://dniewcollectors.blogspot.com/2014/08/trip-to-kelantan-16th-to-18th-august_21.html)
Today, when I went through my collection of Malay States Sultanate coins, I found my piece. This coin with the petalled flower was commonly called Pitis or Keping Matahari (Sun Coin). The petals probably represent the open lotus flower of the Buddhists and reflects Siamese influence. And there were variety of 4 petals, 5 petals, 6 petals and 8 petals minted on gold, copper and tin material.

Obverse: A Six (6) Petalled Flower.
Reverse: Blank.

Edge: Plain.

GOLD KUPANG PATANI-KELANTAN "PADUKA SHAH ALAM"

$

Patani-Kelantan Gold Kupang The " Paduka Shah Alam".
Rarity: RR/SS40

This is an other piece of  Gold Kupang coin that I received from a friend whom I met during my recent trip visit to Kota Bharu Kelantan.

This Gold Kupang weight at 0.61 gram and with a diameter measured at 9.50mm. On the obverse inscripted  in Arabic "Paduka Shah Alam" which means "His Highness Shah Alam" and on the reverse is "Isma Adil" means "Brave and Just". The composition is gold.

I read an article written in the "The Malayan Branch of The Royal Asiatic Society". In June 1920, when a collector obtained this circular coin in bright yellow gold, size about 9mm and weight about 9.4 grains (O.6gm) in Terengganu, a large number of numismatists have seen it but are unable to say where it comes from. Some said it comes from Atjeh (Acheh) of North Sumatra because the name  "Shah Alam" occurs on some of the local gold coins in Acheh. One even thinks it emanated from some small South Indian State, possibly the Beejapur State owing to its type and characters. The Madras Museum thinks it was issued by one of the Mughal Emperors. Ultimately, many suggested it should belongs to some Malay Peninsula State.

Obverse: In Arabic "Paduka Shah Alam" (His Highness Shah Alam).

Reverse: In Arabic "Isma Adil" (Brave and Just).
Edge: Plain.
Weight: 0.61gm.
Diameter: 9.50mm
Composition: Gold.

GOLD KUPANG PATANI-KELANTAN THE KIJANG/NANDI BULL

$
0
0
Kijang / Nandi Bull Gold Kupang Of Patani-Kelantan
Rarity:RRR/ SS54
The word “Nandi” is believed to be derived from the ancient Tamil word “Pandi” meaning bull or its has origins in the Sanskrit language where it means 'of Shiva', 'attendant of Shiva', or happy.

Nandi (Sanskrit: नन्दी, Tamil: நந்தி, Telugu: న౦ది) is the name for the bull which serves as the mount (Sanskrit: Vahana) of the god Shiva and as the gatekeeper of Shiva and Parvati.

This is a  gold coin that was used during the Malay States period that was made by cutting metal discs or octagonal planchets taken from sheets of gold. These were then struck between pairs of inscribed dies. On the obverse is a Bull/Kijang (barking deer) that facing left with tail raised ending in a circle. On the reverse was in scripted with a very crude inscription in Arabic " Malik Al Adil " (The Just Ruler ).

It was graded as RRR by Master Saran Singh.
The Malay Sultanate gold coinage were produced in two denominations, the Mas and the Kupang, which were used as far north as Patani, Kelatan, Terengganu and Kedah, and even in parts of Sumatra
An Mas normally weighed between 36 and 40 grains (2.60gm) of gold, while a Kupang about 9 to 10 grains (0.65gm), thus establishing the rate of exchange at 4 Kupang to 1 Mas.

Bank Negara Malaysia’s Money Museum, The Sasana Kijang has many facts about the evolution of money in Malaysia. Pattani (Patani) or the Sultanate of Pattani was a Malay sultanate that covered approximately the area of the modern Thai provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and much of the northern part of modern Malaysia.

1997 50 CENTS STRAIGHT CLIPPED PLANCHET ERROR COIN

$
0
0
Malaysia Bunga Raya Series 1997 50 Cents With Straight Clipped Planchet Errors.
Rarity:RRR
It has been quite a while I have not seen a Straight Clipped Planchet Error coin. Among the Clipped Planchet Error Coins, i.e. the Curve Clipped Planchet Error coins, Rim Clipped Planchet Error coins or Irregular Clipped Planchet Error coins, the Straight Clipped Coins are more difficult to obtain.

HOW IS A STRAIGHT CLIPPED PLANCHET ERROR COIN OCCURS?
The Straight Clipped Error occurs in the process of cutting blanks from metal strip. When cutting blanks long strips of metal are fed through a machine which cuts the blanks from the metal strip. When the strip runs out it is possible for a blank to be cut when they is not enough metal strip left creating an incomplete blank with a straight edge. Then if it is not removed through the quality control process it will be struck into a coin and a small number of these reach circulation.

If the metal strip shifts during the punching process and the punches overlap the straight side edge of the strip, a straight area of metal will be missing from the planchet. A straight clip appears on a coin as a straight edge. Not all straight edges are straight clips, however.
The edge texture of a straight clip is highly variable. It can be smooth, rough, irregular, or serrated in some fashion. This probably reflects a variety of machines employed for the task — shears, saws, guillotines are three possibilities.

The below images illustrate metal flow and the taper and fadeout of the design rim. This is what we would expect to see when dealing with authentic straight clips

Faded Rim (Reverse)
Faded Rim (Obverse)
No Letter Edge

2011-2014 20 CENTS NICKEL BRASS PLANCHET ERROR

$
0
0
Malaysia 20 Cents (2011-2014) Nickel Brass Planchet Error

Malaysia (2011-2014) 20 Cents Planchet.W:4.18gm.
What is a Planchet?
A planchet is a prepared disc-shaped metal blank onto which the devices of a coin image are struck or pressed. The metal disc is called a blank until the time it passes through the upsetting machine which causes the rim to be raised. Once it has a rim, the disc is called a planchet .
A planchet is a round metal disk that is ready to be struck as a coin. An older word for planchet is flan.

Preparation of the modern planchet involves several steps. First, the metal (or metals in the case of clad or multilayered coins) is rolled out into a large roll or sheet of the correct thickness. This process is often done by third parties, not by the mint itself. These flat rolls or sheets of metal are then punched out into round blanks that are a little larger than the coin being struck. The blanks are then subjected to an annealing process that softens the metal through heating to approximately 750 degrees Celsius and are then slowly air cooled. They are then washed to remove residue from the annealing process and dried. The blanks then go through an upsetting mill that raises the rim on the edge of the coin, the disc is called a planchet .
Finally, the planchet is struck. After striking, it becomes a coin and is no longer a planchet. Occasionally, a planchet will escape the mint without having been struck. This is a blank planchet error, and is usually worth some premium.. Occasionally, blank planchets can be rare and valuable, such is the case for Malaysia One Ringgit blank planchets, although authentication is highly recommended for such pieces as they would be fairly easy to counterfeit.

MNS AUCTION No.161 (28-9-2014).LATEST!
Realised Prices.
Today, our Malaysia Numismatic Society Auction No.161 was held at Museum Negara. Although it was a little bit delayed, the turn out of the MNS members for the bidding were  very overwhelming. It was ended at 12.40pm. We managed to dispatch  all bidded items by 1.30pm.
Looking at the response of today bidded items, those encapsulated coins and banknotes graded by NGC, PCGS and PMG with low uncirculated grading were all rejected by collectors. Whereas the solid numbers banknotes are still in "high fever". This must be resulted by the "after effect"or "hang-over" of yesterday BNM auction.

Trip To Collectibles Auction Asia 4 / 2014 Of Singapore 4-10-2014.(Part 1).
I arrived in Singapore on 2nd of October 2014 to attend the Collectibles Auction Asia. After brunch, Mr. Wong Hon Sum brought me to visit Happy Philatelic Agency at Golden Mile Tower, Beach Road. We had a good  chat with the boss Mr.Steven.

Then we proceed to visit Monetarium Singapore at No.1, Coleman Street, #02-34, The Adelphi, Singapore 179803, Mr Anthony Tan was away to Johor cari-cari makan, we were welcome by his partner Mr Leon Lee and a buddy Singapore senior numismatist Mr. Jeffery Wei.

At 4.00pm we were back to Mr. Wong Hon Sum's home to prepare and arrange auction items for the 3 October 2014 (Friday) public viewing. At 6.00pm we went to Landmark Village Hotel to inspect their preparation of the auction hall at level 6.

On Friday (3-10-2014), all Collectibles Auction Asia (CAA) auction committee members were arrived  at the auction hall at 8.30am. We were ready for the public viewing which was scheduled from 9.00am to 6.00pm.

The public start to show up for registration and viewed their interested bidding items. It was a working day, the visitors were coming in a steady flow. They were more public viewers in the afternoon. I got a surprised visit by Mr.Anthony Tan, the boss of Monetarium Singapore. We had a good sharing on Malay States Sultanate coinage.

The public viewing was over at 6.30pm. We were expecting a good turn out on the auction day!
